MV Music Department presents "Music from the British Isles"

Ever since Beatlemania, the British have had a hard time keeping their hands off of this side of the pond. The latest installment comes in a package of almost 200 high school students at MVHS' Helene Madison Theater.

The Music Department will present its annual winter concert on this hursday, Jan. 29 at 7 p.m., and Friday, Jan. 30 and Saturday, Jan. 31 both at 7:30 p.m. With the theme of “Music from the British Isles,” the concert features one-and-a-half-hours of Britain’s contemporary musical exports: from a medley of The Beatles’ greatest hits, the romantic De Beers commercial theme by Karl Jenkins to some of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical numbers that have swept from London's West End to Broadway.

“British Isles” stars fifteen vocal soloists in beloved duets such as the theme from “The Phantom of the Opera” by senior Clare So and John Chang, “All I Ask of You” by Jaco Wong and junior Rebecca Yin, as well as solo numbers including “Any Dream Will Do” by sophomore Jonathan Cheong and “Memory” from “Cats” by junior Katie Ball.

The highlight of the concert will feature senior Brian Miller and junior Charles Huh in "Starlight Sequence," a medley of songs from Andrew Lloyd Webber's rock musical "Starlight Express." Music director John Galli believes that the number will "get as much audience response as possible as it keeps building and the singers sing higher and higher together."

Soloists and choir will be accompanied by the string orchestra (split into three groups for each performance), the chamber orchestra, and wind ensemble who play all three nights. Tickets are sold in advance for $8 (adults) or $5 (students) at the Music Office or at seatyourself.biz/mvhsmusic, and $10 at the door.
