Varsity Girls Soccer defeated Priory High School 7-1 on Tuesday, Dec. 9. The Matadors quickly overwhelmed PHS with three goals within the first 20 minutes of the first half. In the second half, the Matadors followed up with four consecutive goals by taking advantage of PHS’ offensive plays and forcing them back on defense, ensuring an MVHS victory.
Junior and defensive midfielder Isobel Schweigert broke through PHS’ defense in the last six minutes of the game, with a swift dash towards their goal, scoring the final point of the game. She notes that the MVHS players have been playing well recently and the Matadors were able to experiment with different positions for practice during the game. These experiments happened due to the significant lead they had over the opposing team. This game is the third game of their tournament, and the Matadors are currently undefeated in their season thus far, save for one tie
“This is actually the first time in many years that we’re going to the championship,” Schweigert said. “I’m really excited for that, because we’ve had a really new team this year with a lot of freshmen, but we’ve all been able to work together. There’s really good team chemistry. I’m really looking forward to this weekend, because I think we’re gonna win and get that trophy.”
Goalkeeper Coach Tibor Polgar, who has worked with MVHS goalkeepers for the past 20 years, mentions that MVHS started testing different positions during the game as practice for moving roles around. The coaches wanted to teach this team as many skills as possible while they are still at MVHS.
“This is probably the best team Varsity Girls Soccer has seen since 2012,” Polgar said. “We have a combination of players that know how to play together and are learning how to work together well. The average skill level of each player is higher than it has been since 2012. They’re still learning how to play well together, but they’re a very smart group of players.”
Correction (Jan. 22 08:33 p.m.): This article has been updated to reflect that MVHS competed against Priory High School, not Mills High School.
