Varsity Boys Baseball defeated Saratoga High School 12-0 on Thursday, May 14, extending its winning streak to five games. The Matadors learned after the game that they qualified for the CCS playoffs. Freshman catcher and outfielder Adam Cheung notes that MVHS performed well both offensively and defensively, scoring multiple runs in the first inning and maintaining consistency throughout the rest of the game, effectively shutting out Saratoga.
“We had a lot of energy from the start, and we kept it going through the entire game,” Cheung said. “That helped us stay strong and be ready each moment. We just keep doing the same thing, focusing on the fundamentals and building upon each day to get better and better.”
Senior right fielder Brian Freiling also felt that MVHS played very well this game, mentioning that the team’s offense was really incredible. He believes that the team has consistently performed well throughout the season and that qualifying for CCS feels especially rewarding.
“It was a very amazing game,” Freiling said. “For me, it’s my first time going to CCS, and it just feels really amazing. We had a very good season this year, and I am really proud of my team.”
Head coach Joe Garvin notes the importance of starting strong, emphasizing its relevance to securing the team’s victory. Garvin notes that, though there were areas the Matadors could have improved in, the team’s first successful inning helped calm the players’ nerves significantly by increasing their confidence in themselves.
“I was a little bit worried,” said Garvin. “There’s always a chance that you come out flat, but I was glad they came out ready to go. We didn’t make every play, but we made enough plays. And we’re gonna keep winning. That’s what I’m preaching, and that’s what I’m expecting for the team. So I hope we keep playing as good teammates and playing for the team first, and hopefully that’ll get us pretty far in CCS.”
