Varsity Girls Golf lost 240-243 in its fourth match of the season against Los Gatos High School on Wednesday, Sept. 17. Held at Sunnyvale Municipal Golf Course, the game began at 3 p.m. Junior Addie Lee had a standout performance, taking home an individual medal for her total score of 34 for nine holes.
Although MVHS pulled ahead in the first two rounds by 14 points and maintained their lead until the fourth round, they were unable to retain it and the game ultimately ended in a loss. However, in an email to the team, head coach Kenneth Gan said the team should not be discouraged and instead focus on the CCS league tournament in October.
Freshman and starter Adriana Chen says that she is proud of their strong start to the season, as they had already won their previous three games. She also notes that the team’s practice had paid off, specifically for their lag putting — trying to putt the ball close to the hole, rather than trying to make it — which had helped them on the green.
“I feel pretty good about today’s game,” Chen said. “I think we played proficiently. And I think we’re gonna do good going forward, as long as we practice.”
Chen says that while she originally began playing golf in sixth grade due to her father’s insistence, she now plays for fun. Freshman Summer Cui, who has also played since sixth grade, agrees with Chen, saying that her favorite part is the connections she makes with other players. According to Cui and Chen, they often get along well with their opponents, even becoming good friends with two players on the opposing team.
“You get to meet a lot of different people, and it’s really fun,” Cui said. “You get to have friends from different schools and see so many displays of good sportsmanship. We all help each other out on the course. If there are any rules that need clarifying, or if you just need encouragement overall, everyone’s very open to doing that, and it just comes naturally.”
