MVHS held its “La La Land”- themed prom on Saturday, May 18, aboard the San Francisco Belle cruise ship. Students arrived at school at 4:30 p.m. to check and board their respective buses with friends and fellow peers. The buses departed at around 5:30 p.m., and students boarded the ship once they arrived at the site. Ship staff set up and dishes including Caesar salad, macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes and chicken were served alongside water and soda. The dessert menu followed a few hours later and included fresh fruit, brownies, cookies and lemon bars.
The night continued with students exploring the different decks of the boat and taking pictures in front of the cityscape as well as under the Bay Bridge. Others played recreational card games such as poker and blackjack on the first floor. The highest deck hosted a mosh pit along with a DJ, playing a wide variety of songs such as “Carnival,” “God’s Plan,” Echa Pa’lla (Manos Pa’rriba), the Cupid Shuffle and “Badtameez Dil.” The event came to a close when the buses picked students up and arrived at campus after midnight.
Junior Melissa Qin got ready for the occasion at her friend’s house, where she and her friends did each other’s hair and makeup and took pictures together.
“It felt like sisterhood because we were doing each other’s hair and sharing products and giving each other tips on what to do with our looks,” Qin said.
She acknowledges that she is a little disappointed knowing that this is the last year that prom will be held on a boat — next year, the event will take place at Gilroy Gardens instead. However, she is happy that she was able to experience prom on a cruise and enjoy the views of San Francisco.
