As part of our Dessert Detectives series, El Estoque’s Arts & Entertainment section takes on a new case at a bakery or café to decipher the quality and cost of its most popular items. Continuing the alphabetical trend, we went to Oh Honey Bakery, a quaint dessert shop in downtown Mountain View specializing in choux cream puffs and macarons.

Tiramisu cream puff: $3.50

Rating: 7/10

Dusted in a chocolate powder, the tiramisu cream puff was a delicate balance of crispy pastry and light mascarpone filling. However, it lacked the distinct espresso taste that is essential to a tiramisu-flavored sweet. Despite this, the overall flavor still excelled as the cream filling’s flavor wasn’t too sweet or overpowering and complemented the texture of the crust.

Black sesame Christmas tree cream puff: $4.25

Rating: 5/10

The black sesame cream puff was accented with festive sprinkles, a green dollop of whipped cream and a light dusting of powdered sugar, resembling a Christmas tree in a fresh layer of snow. However, unlike its appealing presentation, the taste was bland, and the only flavor was a very slight aftertaste of black sesame. The sesame flavor itself was barely present at all, a disappointment for its eye-catching exterior.

Ferrero Rocher macaron: $4.50

Rating: 8.5/10

The Ferrero Rocher macaron had a rich hazelnut filling, overpowering a subtle chocolate flavor. Although the Ferrero Rocher placed between the two layers of filling made the macaron challenging to eat, the texture was perfect — chewy with a soft crust, ruffled edges and dense filling. Of the three desserts we tasted, the Ferrero Rocher macaron was the best of the bunch.

Overall: 7/10

Oh Honey Bakery is a small dessert shop with an impressive variety of uniquely flavored, freshly baked cream puffs and macarons. The shop’s emphasis on a visually appealing presentation did not affect their quick service. As for the taste, bold, experimental flavors make the bakery hit-or-miss. With reasonable prices and aesthetic desserts, Oh Honey Bakery is worth taking a gamble on if you’re in downtown Mountain View.
