Varsity Boys Volleyball won 3-2 against Mountain View High School on Wednesday, April 1 in a close game. During the game, the Matadors lost the second and fourth set by a five and 11 point gap, respectively. However, the Matadors won the first, third and fifth set by a seven, six, and five point lead accordingly.
Though the Matadors won the game, Head Coach Paul Chiu was disappointed with the team’s performance, as he believes the team made many errors and lacked execution throughout the game. He also attributes most of the points won by the Matadors to the mistakes of the opposing team.
“We scrapped out a win,” Chiu said. “We didn’t do anything particularly well, except in key moments. We made some plays where we could not serve or receive. They hit a lot of balls out of bounds, and once they started putting balls in play, it put a lot of pressure on us.”
Sophomore and middle blocker Isaiah Slade felt similarly about the team’s performance and believed that the team could have won in a clean sweep. He also mentioned that the team felt overconfident about winning the match, which could have ended in a loss.
“We definitely could have won a lot easier,” Slade said. “We’re just making little, small dumb mistakes. I think if we just cleaned it up, I know we would win better as a team. We have to do a little bit better.”
On the contrary, senior and middle hitter Joaquin Garcia believes that even though the team lost two sets, he and the team played well overall.
“I played very well, I did everything I needed to,” Garcia said. “I got some big, pivotal moments, especially in the fifth set, which helped our team build some momentum that in the end helped us win the game. And as for sets one, three and five, we played well.”
