Varsity Badminton lost 17-13 to Cupertino High School on Tuesday, March 24, in one of its first losses of the season. Winning five out of 14 matches, MVHS made unnecessary errors during the games, which junior and Varsity One doubles player Elva Tang attributes to the reason why MVHS struggled to gain points in both singles and doubles matches.
“I think we could’ve smashed harder and just worked on making fewer errors because a lot of the points that we lost were unforced errors on our side,” Tang said. “It’s because of a lack of practice. In general, I think we just need to be faster and make smarter plays, because in a lot of our games, we end up clearing or lifting to the back, and that gives them a chance to attack, putting us on the defensive.”
Sophomore and Varsity boys double player Casey Lin agrees with Tang — despite MVHS losing the overall match, Lin says that certain moments during the game made it memorable for him and his partner, junior Jeremy Lin. He adds that his cooperation and teamwork with other varsity players enabled effective gameplay, resulting in individual wins.
“Our teamwork today was really great,” Lin said. “Any game is fun, as long as you have a great partner and a great teammate who’s willing to communicate, work well with you, and just overall be a good person.”
Tang and Lin both add that competitive players should remember to enjoy the sport, especially during competitions.
“I think that even though we lost today, I was still having fun,” Tang said. “I think that in badminton, sometimes people forget to enjoy the game. You just need to have fun, lighten up and enjoy yourself, because it’s just a game at the end of the day.”
