Varsity Girls Softball lost 23-0 against Gunn High School on Thursday, March. 5. Assistant Coach Curtis Sloan believes the Matadors faced a difficult match because GHS has formidable pitchers and had recently moved down to the El Camino division. Despite the widening gap between the two teams’ scores throughout the game, the Matadors continued to put effort into both their batting and defense, with players like Freshman and second base Jade Trevizo catching fly balls throughout the game.
Junior and left fielder Srikrithi Duggireddy highlights the team’s performance towards the end of the game. She emphasizes that although the players were worried they might strike out before the end of the inning, they nonetheless still managed to play longer innings throughout.
“When people made mistakes, we supported each other, and that made the loss feel comparatively better,” Duggireddy said. “Our team dynamics were really, really good today. I think we all went out there and we all gave it our 100%. All of us did our best. Even though we lost, it doesn’t matter because it was fun.”
Sloan notes that GHS previously played in the De Anza division and that its team was very strong, currently being ranked first in the El Camino league, so the Matadors’ low score was to be expected. However, Sloan also mentioned that MVHS’ pitcher, junior Luciana Atwell Gonzalez has improved significantly compared to last season.
“We are a developing team,” Sloan said. “We knew what we were getting into. The score doesn’t show it, but overall, we’re a much more athletic team compared to previous seasons. Unfortunately, we’re going to have to go through growing pains, but we are getting better, so there’s a lot to look forward to. We just have to keep coming out here, keep coming to practices, keep our chin up and just keep slugging away.”
