Varsity Girls Soccer tied Saratoga High School 0-0 on Friday, Feb. 13. The Matadors played strong defense throughout the game and had many close scoring attempts, including one that bounced off the goal frame. However, due to strong offense and defense from both sides, the teams played toe-to-toe, ultimately leading to a stalemate.
Since the Matadors previously lost to SHS 4-0 on Saturday, Jan. 23, junior and defensive midfielder Isobel Schweigert believes MVHS improved significantly since then, as the team maintained more consistent control of the ball through strategic connecting passes. Schweigert attributes this to the team’s ability to stay calm under pressure and extensive practice beforehand.
“We did a lot of preparation for this game, specifically watching our own film from the last time we played SHS,” Schweigert said. “Even though it’s really hard to watch, it’s necessary for our improvement. We were looking at our mistakes and seeing what we could fix, and I think we were able to implement that in the game.”
Sophomore and wingback Emy Denina notes that this final game of the season was very high-stakes for the team, as it could impact their chance of making CCS. Despite MVHS and SHS tying, Denina agrees with Schweigert that the Matadors improved this match, and she is optimistic they can qualify.
“When we work together, when we really hype ourselves up, we can do a lot,” Denina said. “I know that we had some pretty low moments, but we were able to implement everything that we were trying to and get ourselves back up.”
