Varsity Girls Basketball won 67-39 against Mountain View High School on Wednesday, Jan. 14, in what was currently one of their best games of the season. The Matadors started strong, putting pressure on Mountain View through strategic offense in the first quarter, ending with a score of 17-4.
During the second quarter, Mountain View closed the gap, ending with a score of 26-18. However, in the third and fourth quarters, MVHS regained control of the game through ball movement, scoring over 20 points in the final quarter and ultimately winning the game.
Junior combo guard Allie Rummelhoff says that the victory was largely due to the successful shift in momentum in the third quarter, where MVHS improved both coordination and teamwork.
“In the second quarter, we let the other team determine the pace of the game, but in the third and fourth quarters, we took control and played our game,” Rummelhoff said. “I think that’s what really let us win by that much, because we just brought each other up, we played our game, and that’s really all we can ask for. I’m very proud of my team.”
Freshman Mabel Yan agrees with Rummelhoff and says that the teamwork in the second half, with additional inbound plays, led to great synergy within the team.
“We were finding a lot of open shots for each other, and creating shots for one another, including rotating efficiently and correctly,” Yan said. “It was definitely a good team win. We were constantly picking it up.”
Rummelhoff adds that the 2025-2026 team has only five returning players, meaning that much of their practice has focused on building coordination and teamwork. Despite this, she says that she’s very proud of the training they’ve done up to this point, as well as how far they’ve come.
“Our team is very young. We have a lot of freshmen, so we’ve been practicing a lot and doing a lot of scrimmages,” Rummelhoff said. “Because we’re a new team, we have to build that team chemistry, and I think that goes both on and off the court. And we’ve gotten so close, and I think that helps us trust each other, and just building unity within our team.”
