Varsity Girls Volleyball defeated Lincoln High School in a 3-0 sweep on Tuesday, Nov. 4. Both teams had a slow start, beginning with back and forth rallies and unforced errors, before MVHS pulled ahead and won the first set 25-18. MVHS gained momentum and adjusted quickly, finding its rhythm closing out the second set. Aces from setter Kylee Mark and defensive specialist Isabella Wong solidified their lead as MVHS won the second set 25-20, then quickly took the third set 25-17.
Head Coach Nadia Lan noted the differences between this team and other opponents they’ve faced previously, and applauded the team’s ability to adapt.
“We usually play taller, bigger teams, and suddenly we have a smaller team doing a lot of placement shots, and going at a slower pace,” Lan said. “We’re not used to it, and we had to make some adjustments to make it work to our advantage and pick it up.”
Senior and defensive specialist Jenna Bergendahl agrees, mentioning how although the team wasn’t able to carry out its tradition of reviewing their opponents’ film before this match, they still had great defense, specifically block and deep corner coverage. Continuing into the playoffs, the team is focused on keeping up the momentum and energy from the start, as well as efficient strategy and execution early on.
Sophomore and setter Clarissa Tick had similar sentiments, particularly appreciating the enthusiastic cheering from the bench.
“We passed really well and our offense was very efficient,” Tick said. “There was great energy both on and off the court, and I think that’s what made the momentum pick up and the game run more smoothly.”
Lan agrees, pointing out how the team was able to bounce back despite the rocky start, and applauding the team’s great energy throughout the rest of the game. She noted that upcoming practices will focus on solidifying defensive and improving offensive accuracy.
“Even though we struggled in the beginning, the spirit was always up, and everyone supported each other,” Lan said. “We still have a good opportunity to go far in this postseason as long as they play together.”
