MVHS held its annual Welcome Back Rally on Friday, Aug. 29 in the main gym. The stands were filled with students decked in corresponding colors for each respective grade level: green for freshmen, pink for sophomores, white for juniors and red for seniors, inspired by a series of fast-food brands: Starbucks, Crumbl Cookies, In-n-Out and Dave’s Hot Chicken.
The rally featured performances from MV Choir, the MV Dance Team, Cheer and the Korean Culture and Dance Club. Between performances, classes battled in competitive rally games that involved fast food trivia with rubber chickens and speed-eating whipped cream on paper plates. This rally marked ASB Executive Treasurer Elspeth Luu’s first time being on the ASB executive officer team. She believes that despite having problems with timing, the rally still went very well.
“People really enjoyed the first week of school events, the rally and all the spirit days because this year we tried to do a lot of spirit days that we hadn’t done before,” Luu said. “People were more excited to participate and come to the rally.”
In the week preceding the rally, leadership organized various spirit days, with one dedicated to wearing clothing corresponding to students’ side tolerances and another during which students wore comfortable clothing and brought their plushies with them to school. Luu notes that leadership struggled to manage the first week of school due to the large amount of labor, along with preparing all the activities. However, she still feels like the spirit days and rally were an overall success.
“I was part of class office for three years, so this rally made it feel like it came full circle, since it’s my first one on the ASB executive team,” Luu said. “I used to help out with the class chant, making sure my class had all the participants. Now I’m more behind the planning of the actual rally, the script and logistics. Just being on the mic and feeling all of the spirit was really new and exhilarating.”
