Varsity Baseball fell to Fremont High School 3-2 on Friday, May 9. Although MVHS led 2-1 for most of the game, FHS scored two more runs in the 7th inning and the 8th inning after Varsity Baseball chose to walk a few batters. Pitcher and Freshman Joseph Murai says that the team needed to play with higher energy and play better during close games.

“We tried to come out of the gate with higher energy which worked, but unfortunately, we couldn’t keep it,” Murai said. “Our energy went down when they scored one run, and we never picked it back up. I need to pitch better in tighter situations and more high pressure situations and I need to throw more strikes and be more locked in.

First baseman and senior Ace Chow agrees, saying that everyone played well individually and as a team but ended up losing their energy and focus later in the game, causing them to fall behind.

“We had some good fielding and some good hitting,” Chow said. “We kind of got a little lackadaisical towards the end, we weren’t really focused, and that just caused us to not get any runs.”

Throughout the game junior Varsity Coach Joe Garvin, who was coaching this varsity game, tried to include some other strategies in the game plan, such as shortening swings and putting the ball in play as much as possible to put pressure on FHS’ defense.

With the game tied 2-2 at the bottom of the 8th inning, they ended up choosing to walk a few hitters. However, FHS would end up scoring to win the game 3-2. Although the team ultimately lost the game due to its lack of energy, as mentioned by Chow and Murai, Garvin says that the team still put in a good effort and played well all around.

“I couldn’t have been more proud of this effort,” Garvin said. “There were a couple of breaks that didn’t go our way, but that’s baseball. Sometimes the cards don’t fall in your favor but there’s no blame to be had. We played good ball.”
