La Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica (Spanish Honor Society) is getting a new home for this school year. Spanish teacher Maria Autran is taking over for Spanish teacher Molly Guadiamos as the new adviser, and the club’s meetings have been moved to room A209.

Co-president senior Saketh Kurnool expressed his disappointment in the departure of Guadiamos.

It is a little bit sad that Guadiamos can’t be our adviser anymore,” Kurnool said, “but we understand that she has many things on her plate.”

Senior Monica Haskell, another officer, says that the club will not undergo any sort of drastic change. Having never had Guadiamos as a teacher, Haskell does not notice a difference within the club and voiced that the only noticeable difference is the change in location of club meetings, as the officers do most of the work within the club.

This isn’t the first club Autran has been the adviser of. Several years ago, MVHS used to have another club which worked in coordination with Spanish Honor Society, the Spanish club. When the Spanish Club became inactive, Guadiamos was left in charge of Spanish Honor Society while Autran was left without a club.

Autran is excited about the potential that the club has to make a positive impact, both on and off campus.

“One of the things they do is volunteering,” said Autran. “They help others, and they use the language, and I think those things are very valuable to learn the language and to learn the culture and to be out of their environment and to be in contact with Spanish-speaking people, so I am very happy that I can help.”

Kurnool and Haskell are excited for the upcoming year.

“I want to get kids excited about going to club meetings,” Haskell said. “I want to get kids excited to get involved in volunteering, whether it’s volunteering during tutorial or during Sunday Friends.”
