MV American Cancer Society hosts “Pink Up Your Week”

October is widely known as Breast Cancer Awareness month. People all over the world spread awareness for this disease by conducting fundraisers, donating or just wearing pink. From Oct. 27 to Oct. 31 MV, American Cancer Society hosted “Pink Up Your Week,” a week full of activities intended to spread awareness for both breast cancer and the club itself.

The activities that MVACS members took part in included writing letters to cancer patients, making pink and white bracelets and more. On Wednesday, MVACS wanted to conduct a few carnival games. They were canceled and MVACS wanted to postpone them for another day, or hold off on that event for another time altogether, due to the complications that arose that week. MVACS also conducted an Instagram challenge. MVACS co-president Roshini Pal believes that Instagram is an effective way to spread awareness.

“It’s an easy way to get outreach to a lot of different classes,” Pal said. “I have freshmen who are now interested in our club who didn’t even know this club existed.”

Participants took photos based on the specific daily challenge, and added the hashtag #MVACS. Some of the challenges included taking a picture with a woman you love, playing a sport and wearing your halloween costume. Many other people became aware of the cause by seeing the hashtag and started to ask more about the club.

Sophomore Meghan Rai posted a picture everyday for the Instagram challenge, though she is not an actual member of MVACS. Rai believes that people need to be aware of breast cancer and be active in helping the cause, rather than just watching Breast Cancer Awareness month come along. Apart from the Instagram challenge, Rai had been quite excited to take part in all the activities that MVACS had planned.

“I thought it was a really fun way to involve Breast Cancer Awareness month,” Rai said. “I like showing my spirit for Breast Cancer Awareness month in general.”

MVACS plans to make a big, pink poster with all the written letters pasted on top, which they plan to send to a local hospital to show the school’s support for breast cancer.
