Staff sergeant Hugh Jacobs joined the army underaged during World War II. After the army discovered how old he really was, he was pulled from active combat and subsequently reassigned to supply radio and radar stations along the West Coast with food and clothing. He and the rest of his team ran night shifts without headlights for fear of the Japanese submarines attacking them.
After World War II, Jacobs got rid of all of his mementos that reminded him of the experience. The only possession he has left from that time period is a photograph of him during the war. “I just wanted to get rid of it,” he said. “I just wanted to forget.”
Below is the video summarizing one of Jacobs’ experiences during the war.
