Students and teachers talk about the stereotypes presented in the Wall Street Journal’s article “Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior”
On Jan. 8, The Wall Street Journal published an excerpt from Yale professor Amy Chua’s new novel “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother”. In the article, titled “Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior”, Chua detailed the strict upbringing of her two daughters as well as the Chinese mindset towards what it means to raise a successful child. Since its publication, the article has incited over 6000 comments as well as a number of related articles. The article has also been the subject of fervent discussion at MVHS, a school that is over 70 percent Asian in a country that is less than 5 percent Asian. Many students and staff members spoke out against the stereotypes propagated in the article while others found themselves relating to Chua’s philosophy and methods.
