Marketing organization sells Baking Club’s pastries for charity
On Sept. 19, DECA combined efforts with Baking Club to hold a bake sale in front of Lucky’s grocery store in Los Altos to support health care in Africa. The event was a part of the annual DECA Chapter Public Relations Project, which started last year. The officers and members typically hold various fundraisers to raise money for a philanthropic cause, and this year DECA is funding two organizations—FACE AIDS, a youth foundation that battles the HIV virus, and Charity: Water, which provides clean water to impoverished African villages.
“We’re teaming up with [Community Service Project] and launching a campaign together,” sophomore DECA Director of Civil Consciousness Michelle Chan said. “So we’re raising awareness [for public relations] and fundraising at the same time.”
Although this is not the first time DECA has held fundraisers, the marketing organization is taking them to another level this year.
“This is the first [time] that [we’ve had] more of a collaborative thing between multiple projects, as well as really going through a year-long campaign for charity,” senior DECA president Japheth Wong said.
For the bake sale itself, the goal was to earn approximately $200, but DECA ended up with a revenue of about $466 from the various goods courtesy of Baking Club, including cookies, cupcakes, Rice Krispy treats and brownies. Members of Baking Club assembled at officers’ houses to finish the baking, serving the club’s purpose as the school pastry chefs.
“[It’s] cool for two clubs to work together,” sophomore DECA public relations officer Diana Liu said. “I don’t think that happens very often at [MVHS].”
