Varsity Track and Field won 184-60 against MacDonald High School on Wednesday, April 1, in their last home meet. Varsity Boys won 105-31, while Varsity Girls won 79-39. This meet was also their Senior Night, and began with announcing and celebrating the seniors from both schools.
Distance runner and sophomore Samuel Heinonen notes that this meet was a continuation of the Varsity Boys’ winning streak in dual meets and an overall reflection of the team’s success this season. He believes some runners of the team could improve by starting their races faster, but in general, the team is very well rounded. Reflecting on his personal journey, he hopes to continue working hard during practices, and incorporating feedback from teammates and coaches.
“It’s been really good this season so far,” Heinonen said. “I hope that I can become better at the 800m race, because currently, I’m not as good at it compared to all my other events. I also hope to go to the Central Coast Section in an individual event next year.”
1600 meter, 800 meter and 4×400 meter relay runner and senior Suhani Pahuja feels very proud of both her team and her own performance. Pahuja received first place in both the 1600 meter and 800 meter races and is especially happy with how unified the team has been and how well they work together.
“We’re demolishing these kids from MHS,” Pahuja said. “They might leave feeling a little disappointed, but what matters is that we’re victorious.”
This meet is not the end of Pahuja’s running journey, as she plans to continue during the postseason and likely into college. However, she knows that for some seniors, this is their last meet, and hopes they made the most out of it.
“I want to end on a strong note, and I want to cherish the time I have left,” Pahuja said. “Everyone really tried to do their best as they could, and I really like that about the team’s performance.”
