Varsity Girls Basketball won 59-38 against Milpitas High School on Wednesday, Jan. 21. The Matadors started strong, scoring the first three-pointer of the game and ending the first quarter ahead by 13 points. In the second quarter, MHS began to close the gap, keeping pressure on MVHS’ half of the court and bringing the score up to 23-18.
Despite MHS gaining momentum during the second quarter, MVHS kept its lead, scoring a series of three-pointers in the third quarter while maintaining its strong defense, ultimately allowing MVHS to enter the fourth quarter leading 52-29. MHS scored nine more points but could not overcome MVHS’ lead. The Matadors scored the final two-pointer to finish the game.
Senior and post Navya Parvathaneni believes that the team’s efficient communication resulted in its victory. She also believes that their consistent practice helped solidify their plays, allowing them to secure an early lead.
“The practice before this game was slightly more difficult because we had lost our previous game,” Parvathaneni said. “But we learned to communicate more, and while we pulled back a little bit and they outshot us during the second quarter, we hustled a lot during the first quarter, and we still made it up in the end.”
Freshman guard and shooting guard Alice Tie believes the team can improve in future games by showing more consistent effort, citing its scoring lapse in the second quarter. She also notes that MVHS’ height advantage during the game allowed them to take advantage of rebounds.
“I think something we need to work on is hustling and running,” Tie said. “We definitely have the potential to be even better. This was an easier game for us, but we could have done better, and we should have worked harder.”
