MV Gender and Sexuality Alliance hosted its annual Coming Out Day celebration on Friday, Oct. 25 at lunch in the Rally Court, two weeks after National Coming Out Day on Friday, Oct. 11. The event started with the popular song “Hot To Go!” by Chappell Roan, a popular LGBTQ+ artist. GSA members decorated the Rally Court stage with colored chalk, writing “MVGSA” in the center, and illustrating the area with rainbows, cartoon characters and animals.
Later on, officers brought out a “coming out” door where students had the opportunity to walk through or stand in front of the door and metaphorically come out. They later hung the transgender and bisexual pride flags on top and tied the nonbinary and asexual flags on either side of the door.
Junior and GSA Vice President Archana Kakar says the officers decided to host the event after the national celebration since they wanted more time for planning and promotion, so more students could participate. Due to the low attendance this time around, she hopes to still see more publicity for the club and celebration next year. Kakar emphasizes that this day was important to her not just because of her role in the club, but because of the significance the event has to people in the LGBTQ+ community.
“It’s really important that people who are part of the LGBTQ+ community know that they have a community behind them and that they are welcome and accepted in Monta Vista GSA and Monta Vista,” Kakar said. “I think Coming Out Day is kind of helping to get the word out to other people that there is a community here for you.”
