Varsity Girls Volleyball won 3-0 against Piedmont Hills High School in its first game of the season on Wednesday, Sept. 4. MVHS began the first set with a lead that would last for the rest of the first and through the second set, aiding them as they won 25-12 and 25-10 respectively. MVHS and PHHS were neck-to-neck for the first half of the third set, but MVHS ultimately drew ahead to win 25-17.
Junior and outside hitter Minahil Kizilbash says the drills and practices the team worked on over the summer contributed to its success on the court. Despite this, Kizilbash recognizes that there is room for improvement.
“My personal goal for the rest of the season is definitely to become more consistent,” Kizilbash said. “I feel like I’m not as consistent as the rest of the team and I want to work harder so that I’m at the same level with them and I feel like I’m ready to play with them.”
Although senior and middle blocker Ashley Yang acknowledges the team should work on defense, she believes the team worked well together for its first game. She noted that the coach had a lot of the bench play, allowing them to experiment with new combinations. One new thing Yang tried was passing more, something she doesn’t normally do as a middle blocker but finds enjoyable.
“I think it was really cool to see our team open up because this was the first time we played an official game,” Yang said. “Also it was unfortunately an easy game. I’m looking forward to more intense games in the future.”
