Varsity Swim faced Mountain View High School on Friday, April 5 on its senior night. Varsity Boys and Varsity Girls both won with a score of 96-70 and 107-63 respectively. During the meet, seniors stood on the diving boards before the spectators and were recognized for their journeys by underclassmen, who gave them personalized speeches and candy necklaces.
Going into the meet, senior Courtney Yuen, who swam the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly, recalls that she was more focused on having fun for her senior night rather than trying to do her best and worrying about her actual time.
“It’s a little bit sad because I swam here for four years and I feel like home meets are really special because everyone that you know is here,” Yuen said. “And then I won’t ever swim in this pool again for a meet, so it’s a little sad.”
Senior Ben Everitt, who has been swimming for MVHS for three years, competed in the 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard relay. He acknowledges that he was pleased with his performance, especially after winning first in the 200-yard relay, and that everyone’s hard work during practice has motivated the team as a whole.
“Everyone showing up for the most part has kind of helped lighten the mood and keep it going,” Everitt said. “It makes us keep swimming around, and we’ve been having a good time.”
