Varsity Swim defeated Fremont High School on Thursday, March 28 with a score of 181.5 to 153.5. Varsity Girls won against FHS 97.5-69.5 while Varsity Boys tied 84-84.

Sophomore Nandini Karthik says the game was originally scheduled for Friday, March 29, but was changed to the day before since too many students were unavailable to compete on that day due to personal reasons and mentions that the weather on Friday was not ideal for swimming. Head Coach Jeff Russ says the team could improve attendance for both games and practice.

“People need to commit to coming to practice more,” Russ said. “But doing well at the meets would be the number one priority.”

Russ says the team did well at the swim meet, with many athletes achieving personal best times. Junior Steve Yang, whose main event is the 500-yard freestyle, achieved his best time of five minutes and thirty-five seconds.

“Getting a PR felt great because when you train every day and you get a personal best, it is a really good accomplishment,” Yang said. “But my goal is to get as many points as I can with my team because I really want my team to win.”

Yang says the team is improving as a result of the effort each member puts in every practice but notes that the team needs to work on its spirit. Senior Audrey Luu agrees, stating that the team could focus on cheering more for each other.

“This year, we are a smaller team than in previous years, so I think there is more of a chance for us to connect with each other and have that sense of camaraderie,” Luu said. “That’s what I really hope to see for the season.”
