Varsity Girls Basketball won against Lynbrook High School 52-45 on Wednesday, Jan. 17 in its fourth league game of the season. The team started off with a lead of 11-6 in the first quarter and ended halftime with a score of 26-19. The Matadors continued their momentum through the second half, resulting in a third-quarter score of 36-31 and later securing the win.
Junior and shooting guard Clara Fan notes that the team was able to adjust well by identifying key players from LHS’s team and limiting their impact. Although she says she didn’t play confidently, Fan hopes to improve her confidence in future games by taking more shots.
“I’m really glad that we got the win even though we didn’t play our absolute best,” Fan said. “We all played together, sharing the ball and hyping each other up when we made more important shots.”
Senior and captain Carolyn Ruan agrees that the game went well, highlighting a moment at the end of the last quarter where the team executed an efficient play to close out the game and keep the ball in possession. She adds that since this was an away game against LHS, an especially strong opponent, it made the win even more rewarding.
“We’ve seen them play and their films,” Ruan said. “So we knew that it would be an exciting game, and we’ve been preparing for this.”
Fan adds that one thing the team can work on is calmly taking control and maintaining the lead in the upcoming games. She suggests that the team try to keep their good energy rolling throughout each game to ensure future success.
“Overall, the season is going really well,” Fan said. “I’m having a lot of fun, and we’re all enjoying each other’s company so much. That shows on the court through our chemistry and we’re just playing really well together.”
