Varsity Girls Volleyball defeated Westmont High School 3-0 on Tuesday, Nov. 1 in the Central Coast Section Quarterfinals, landing them a place in the semifinals.

MVHS played with multiple successes throughout the first set, with junior Evelyn Yang being responsible for multiple point-winning kills. Still, WHS put up a challenging opposition, causing the first set to be the game’s closest with an ending score of 25-19. In the end, the Matadors pulled ahead, and sophomore Ashley Yang got the final kill in the set, ending it 25-14.

In the third set, MVHS maintained strong momentum and stayed ahead of WHS. As the set went on, sophomore Kiana Mark spiked the ball after a sustained, tense rally following both team’s near saves. With MVHS in the lead with two sets, the Matadors took the win when WHS missed the receiving hit over in the third set, ending the game with a score of 25-15.

According to sophomore and middle blocker Samantha Tong, the team’s perseverance throughout the game led to their eventual success.

“I thought we played really well as a team together,” Tong said. “We kept our emotions stable throughout the whole match and we brought the intensity that we needed to bring.”

Senior and setter Sydney Su also highlights the team’s serve-receive  as an area of improvement for the semifinals.

“When they were serving short, we got tripped up a few points, but we talked about it and I think we got that under control,” Su said. “I think perfecting our serve-receive, which we have been doing, and then maybe communicating more [can help us improve for next time].”

Overall, Su is excited about the win and is looking forward to seeing how the team plays as they move up to the CCS Semifinals.

“I’m really happy,” Su said. “We’ve set some goals this season. We want to make it back to CCS and get to CIF champs. So I’m really happy with this win because we’re just, one step at a time, [getting closer] towards our goal.”
