uring the next three weeks, the 2017-2018 Marquesas will perform for the last time at USA Dance Nationals in Anaheim, Calif. and then it’ll be time to pick next year’s officers and dance team.
Nationals, which the Marquesas depart for on March 29, concludes Plaza’s first competition season with the team. Reflecting back, Plaza is both proud of what the team accomplished this year and excited to see what next year has to offer.
“I think we kind of showed the rest of the schools [this year] that we’re changing our stylistic approach to what’s been done in the past,” Plaza said. “I’ve had great feedback from just random teachers, random people complimenting choreography … so I hope the girls feel proud because I’m proud … it’s been really nice to just see the growth in their dancing.”
After Nationals, the Marquesas will hold auditions for the 2018-2019 team. Plaza says that all the current members of the Marquesas will re-audition, since she believes that auditions serve as a motivator for dancers to continue improving.
“[It’s] something that makes you work harder,” Plaza said. “It makes you reflect on your work ethics and your progress and then don’t get comfortable. I think that’s where some members sometimes get too comfortable and kind of start slacking off and have a little bit less drive.”
