The Intramural Ultimate Frisbee Tournament continued with the quarterfinals on April 21. With two fifteen-minute games, teams Chang Dynasty and GG RIP progressed to the semifinals.
Monta Vista Squad vs. GG RIP (6-2 GG RIP)
Although the primarily freshmen Monta Vista Squad had arrived at the quarterfinals, the upperclassmen GG RIP would put their progress to a halt. In a tournament of mostly seniors, the freshmen team stood out.
Despite the outcome of the match, the freshmen joked at their loss after the game. Not only did GG RIP have a size advantage, their players were superior in playing at a fast tempo to discourage defenders, and far-fetched catches from GG RIP often brought shouts of astonishment from the spectators.
With their elimination, the freshmen trudged off the field with the weight of their backpacks. However, unlike most of the other competitors, they would still have a chance next year.
Chang Dynasty vs. Schrodinger Stobies (5-0 Chang Dynasty)
No, there never was a Chang Dynasty in China. But after cruising past the Schrodinger Stobies 5-0, Chang Dynasty may soon make its mark on MVHS Intramural Ultimate Frisbee history. Comprised of a team where almost all players had the surname Chang, key players like senior Justin Chang helped propel them to the semifinals.
But it wasn’t an expected win. The Schrodinger Stobies — Schrodinger was a Nobel Prize-winning quantum physicist, and no one’s sure what Stobies are — had an arsenal of track team members, and were looking to utilize their speed for a win.
However, during the first half of the game, it was seen that would not be the precedent. Senior Justin Chang flung a wild pass into the air. Almost miraculously, senior Calvin Chang made an equally wild grab for the frisbee and toppled to the ground, victorious as a stampede of Stobies charged to pick up the potential drop.
With Chang Dynasty’s rhythm and Schrodinger Stobies’ inability to hold onto a pass, it was an easy victory.
The semifinals are tomorrow at lunch on the upper field.
