A night filled with lights, swing dancing and flapper dresses altogether create the 1920’s themed dance, Blue Pearl.

On Friday, April 13 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., MVHS hosted the third annual Blue Pearl event to give students a taste of a different era and raise money for the American Heart Association. With around 175 attendees, the Student Life commission of Leadership were able to raise $2000.

“Last year [Blue Pearl] was more successful as a fundraiser,” lead commissioner senior Ben Yang said. “But this year’s Blue Pearl was a much better event overall in that it was more enjoyable in all aspects for the people who came.”

According to Student Life commissioner junior Sanjeev Ranga, there was more effort put into making the decorations this year, which resulted in setting the perfect mood for the dance.

To add to the overall effect, Italian restaurant Buca Di Beppo catered a three course meal which included salad, pasta and cake for dessert. The tables laid out for the students were decorated with flowers in a vase of blue water in the center of the table and to complete the festivities, there were blue marbles surrounding the vase. This helped create a calming and fun atmosphere.

A professional swing dancer was also there to teach the students some basics of the swing, and as the night progressed, so did the moves.

“I’ve gone the past two years and it’s been a lot of fun because you get to dance and learn dances that you normally wouldn’t learn in any dance setting,” junior Nikitas Kanellakopoulos said. “It’s a nice change of pace.”

According to sophomore Angie Tong, the best part of the night was when the students mastered the moves and then were able to dance with different people, which encourages socializing with peers you normally wouldn’t.

“Once everyone got the moves down, it was awesome going around to different people and teaching each other what we know,” Tong said.
