Matadors defeat Homestead and take on CCS tournament
Varsity wrestling’s biggest win of the season
On Feb.10, the varsity wrestling team visited Homestead High School for their last dual meet of the season. Going into the dual with a league record of 2-3, the Matadors were expecting a win against Homestead to even out their record.
With a score of 50-20, the win built confidence going into the CCS tournament a week later. Despite the Matadors’ two losses in the 103 and 145 pound weight group, neither were the result of direct pins. The Matadors more than compensated for their two losses with six pins against Homestead.
Seven varsity wrestlers qualify for CCS
Heading into CCS, some wrestlers competed in heavier weight groups—choosing not to lose weight before the match. They wrestled as they were and even had a team lunch at Double D’s restaurant in Los Gatos prior to the CCS tournament. Team captain senior Andrew Pappas attributes this to the somewhat disappointing results of the CCS tournament. Furthermore, one of the team’s key players, senior Adrian Garcia, was unable to compete due to medical reasons.
“We’re a relatively young team,” Pappas said. “Everyone gave their best effort.”
The varsity team welcomed many underclassmen this year, including sophomores Sanjeev Ranga and James Whall as well as freshman Faris Karaborni.
The Matadors ended with a league record of 3-3. Though the season is over for the Matadors, some of the wrestlers will continue to attend wrestling camps and club trainings throughout the summer.
