MVHS Saturday Night Live holds tryouts five months earlier
The annual rendition of Saturday Night Live, a Drama department tradition that usually takes the stage around January each year, will tickle the audience’s funny-bone in September instead. As a result, auditions for MVSNL took place during the first week of school.
The changes were made in response to the difficulties of accommodating actors’ schedules and the other activities within the Drama department.
Co-producers seniors Kelly Jackson and Revati Dhomse have confirmed that after the date change, there are the same number of school days for actors to practice between auditions and opening night. Although last year’s actors had winter break for practice, this year, they will not have that added time. There will be no other major changes to the show.
“Maybe two months after school starts [would be the best time to hold auditions],” freshman Anna Aswadhati said. “At this point, freshmen aren’t familiar with the school.”
The co-producers advertised for SNL on announcements. 71 people tried out this year, whereas 80 people tried out last year. Since 60 people were accepted last year, the co-producers had hoped that having a smaller number of people auditioning will make the selection process easier.
“Everyone loves SNL,” Dhomse said. “People who… want to do something and be on stage at least once, this is what they do.”
