What better way to start off the new year than with a date at the ball?
For most students, asking people to dances is a festive occasion. The bigger, the better—and the more likely someone will say yes. Everyone likes to make a public spectacle out of who is asking who and whose method is better. It’s almost like there are four asking seasons: Homecoming, Winter Ball, Sadies, and Prom.
This year the thrill of winter ball season started with the daily announcements and School Loop messages, allowing all potential attendees to be informed about bid prices and sale dates. The School Loop messages set off a bright outlook on Winter Ball by saying "we hope to start seeing your creative way of asking that lucky someone."
The first day arrived with long lines due to the highly discounted $75 couple bids that were only available on Dec. 7. Bids were sold, but where were the dates? Though the first day sale encouraged students to go to Winter Ball, it also put a speed bump in the outlandish askings.
However, some were brave enough to risk a "yes" or "no". Freshman Thomas Barber waited until the perfect moment on New Year’s Eve to ask his date, sophomore Steffanie Sum, to winter ball.
"We were at her house for her New Year’s Eve party/birthday party and during the ball drop when it got to the new year I asked. Actually we got everyone at the party to say Winter Ball instead of New Year but she didn’t hear that," Barber said.
Luck was on Barber’s side and the waiting paid off. He managed to get the right girl at the perfect moment, and even managed to take the advantage of the first day sale.
Sum had no idea that she was going to be asked because most people bought their bids early and asked before winter break.
"I wasn’t expecting it at all. I was just like ‘Oh, its kind of late. It’s okay, I just won’t go to winter ball this year,’ " Sum said.
Though this year’s pre-winter ball didn’t bring the usual share of out of the box askings, there were still some that were memorable and gossip-worthy not only for MVHS students, but also for the dates themselves.
