The MVHS Varsity Track & Field team completed an undefeated 2025 season in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League. Both the Varsity Boys and Girls teams had a season filled with numerous team and individual accomplishments such as high placings at invitational tournaments.
Junior Lauren Moore, who competes in triple jump and long jump, attributes the team’s success to its hard-working mentality. Moore adds that the strong work ethic of the team incentivized her to raise her own performance.
“It felt like throughout the season, the energy kept getting higher and higher, and it wasn’t really dwindling away,” Moore said.
Junior Zoe Laruelle, who participates in triple jump and hurdles, agrees with Moore, saying that the positive environment of the team greatly contributed to their success. Laruelle recalls various team dinners that helped the team bond and further support each other.
“Even though it’s an individual sport, it’s so easy to make friends in track — no other sport is really like that,” Laurelle said. “That’s definitely motivated me and I’ve tried to reciprocate the same thing, but there’s no pressure.”
Junior Jayden Tang, who competes in the 100m and the 200m, also felt that the closeness of the team helped him succeed.
“Once we bonded, we motivated each other to continue to go to practice and work hard,” Tang said. “We all have one goal, trying to get better together and have fun while doing it.”
Although adversity such as a wave of various illnesses and various difficulties with suboptimal weather came throughout the season, Laruelle said the team was still able to get through the regular season with relatively low stress levels.
“Usually league meets weren’t really something that were nerve wracking at all,” Laruelle said. “The main thing about league meets was just improving my own times, because then the results will directly follow.”
Throughout the season, various members of the Girls Track and Field team broke school records. At the CCS Top 8 Invitational on April 19 at Los Gatos High School, Junior Lelani Laruelle completed a high jump at 5 feet 8 inches. At the same event, senior Clara Fan completed a 39 feet triple jump.
As for the Boys Track and Field team, school records were broken by a few members of the team. At the Saint Francis High School invitational on March 15, junior Ryan Shen completed a 23’1” long jump. At the El Camino League finals, junior Jayden Tang* completed a 100m dash in 10.88 seconds.
*The listed MVHS Boys 100m record of 10.74 (set by Ken Carlson at the CCS Top 8 Invitational in 1986) was taken on a hand held timer, and was deemed unofficial as Carlson had an official time of 10.96.
