Varsity Boys Volleyball won its senior night 3-0 against Cupertino High School on Wednesday, April 30. The team held its senior night ceremony before the match, with each senior receiving a poster and a short speech from underclassmen.
MVHS and CHS stayed head to head throughout the match, with CHS rarely trailing behind by more than three points. However, the Matadors took all three sets, winning 25-22, 25-21 and 25-22 respectively. Junior and outside hitter Michael Yeung attributes the team’s ability to pull ahead of CHS to strategically called timeouts, which helped the team focus.

“It’s all about the huddle,” Yeung said. “Every single time that coach calls a timeout, or we have a break in between sets, we get the team hyped up, learn our lessons and then we’re ready for the next play.”
Senior and middle blocker Talus Leong believes the win was more than just an exciting game between two strong teams. For him, it was also personally meaningful because it marked his volleyball progress over his high school years.
“I joined this team last year without any volleyball experience,” Leong said. “I’ve improved since then. The team has helped me a lot, and I’m proud that I got to play.”
Yeung also found the game to be special, especially after spending the prior week preparing senior posters. He looks forward to the last few games he has with the team’s current seniors.
“It’s shocking that in less than a couple of weeks, it’s going to be the last time we get to play with them in high school,” Yeung said. “It’s been such a long journey, and I’m so thankful that we were able to enjoy the season together.”
