ASB Spirit hosted the Boat Battle at the MVHS pool during lunch on Wednesday, April 30. In the week leading up to the event, participants from each class competed in pairs to build boats with materials such as duct tape and cardboard before finally putting their boats to the test by facing off with the other classes in the pool.
While the spectators cheered and sprayed water on the competitors with water guns, the competitors worked to sink their opponents’ boats using kickboards, buckets and more water guns. Although the Class of 2027 and Class of 2025 boats failed to float well enough to allow the players to participate in the majority of the battle, both the Class of 2028 and Class of 2026 boats were successful in supporting the weights of their respective players, allowing them to paddle around and attack each other in the water.
Ultimately, the Class of 2026 team, composed of juniors Gillie Ross and Chris Lamfalusi, won the battle, earning a six-piece box of Crumbl cookies. Despite the Class of 2026 spending a minimal amount of time preparing for the battle, Ross believes that the event turned out well and attributes her team’s win to their coordination and partnership.
“Me and my favorite partner, Chris, we really did this together,” Ross said. “It was such a hard battle, but we persevered, and we did it in the end.”
To celebrate their win, Ross and Lamfalusi stood up on their boat, causing it to sink along with the Class of 2028 boat. Recalling the moment as a personal highlight, Ross says she found the event very enjoyable and plans to participate again next year if possible.
“It was great,” Ross said. “When the freshmen went under and we stood on the boat, we already knew that we won. It was a lot of fun.”
