MVHS and LHS Winter Guard and Percussion hosted the Winter Home Show on Wednesday, April 4 in the Bettencourt Gym. JV Winter Guard performed their routine “After the Clock Strikes Midnight,” while Varsity performed their routine “Silence in the Library.” After a short intermission, Winter Percussion performed “Technology,” “Starfall” and “Eye of the Storm.”
Unlike typical competitions where Winter Guard and Percussion perform in front of judges and other schools, the Winter Home Show was for an audience of friends and family. Senior and percussionist Kyle Felicitas believes that the difference in environment changed the nature of the performance.
The show was also Senior Night for both MVHS and LHS Winter Guard and Percussion, with the final event of the night also consisting of a short ceremony where all seniors lined up and were recognized for their achievements and accomplishments during their time with Winter Guard or Percussion. As senior and Winter Guard member Jessica Liu lined up for a group photo, she reminisced on her time on the team throughout her high school career.
“My first season is the most memorable season,” Liu said. “It was just a very happy season where there was not a lot of stress and just a lot of fun. So that’s probably a season I’ll hold for the rest of my life. After this performance, I felt very happy for a good run, but also a little bit sad because it’s the end of this life and the end of a chapter.”
Similarly, senior Juyeon Kang believes that the performance was a bittersweet experience, and that, although Winter Guard will continue to grow in the coming years, this season was particularly memorable because the team got to participate in different experiences than in previous years.
“This year, we went to Palm Desert High School,” Kang said. “We used to go to San Diego for our competition, but this year, we wanted to try something different. We also got to watch different color guard teams perform after it, so it became a great motivation for us to keep trying and keep doing what we are doing.”
