MVHS hosted its Career, Vocational and College Fair in the main gym on Wednesday, March 19, from 10:10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Over 50 representatives, including the ARMY, USPS, US Bank, local colleges and career programs, hosted interactive presentations and answered students’ questions about their respective pathways. Booth representatives distributed flyers for more information, as well as snacks and swag like drawstring bags, pens and even metal taco holders to student attendees.
Career Advancement & Transitions specialist for FUHSD Adult School Raji Visvanathan’s booth presented information about the FUHSD Adult School’s nursing assistant class and office assistant certificate to help prepare students for future jobs. Visvanathan notes that student participation was high and hoped that students were able to learn about opportunities offered at her school.
“I’m very happy about the amount of students that have approached me,” Viswanathan said. “Many students have expressed an interest in nursing or being a doctor. Attending a nursing assistant class is a great way to find out if patient care is the right career choice for you.”
ASB student leadership helped set up and run the event, which included organizing a scavenger hunt with the reward of spinning a roulette to win candy bars. Junior and ASB member Jayden Tang notes that he was originally afraid the lack of promotion around the event would lead to diminished participation. However, Tang believes the event was largely successful, and booths such asthe Navy and Santa Clara Fire Department were especially well attended.
“I hope students can be more educated about what they want to do in the future,” Tang said. “I also hope they can find summer opportunities and work opportunities from speaking with these people here.”
