Varsity Boys Basketball defeated Cupertino High School 56-48 on Wednesday, Feb. 12. The win put MVHS at a five-game winning streak and third place in the SCVAL El Camino league standings.
Junior and guard/small forward Kendrick Wong believes the team’s energy was a large contributor to the win. Wong notes that he felt his confidence was down at some points of the game, but his team was able to uplift him and help him regain it.
“Overall I think it went pretty well,” Wong said. “Our energy, even though it was lower than some of our previous games, was still pretty high today. Our defense was doing good, and our offense was firing on all cylinders.”
MVHS maintained steady gameplay throughout, never letting CHS take the lead. The strong offense also kept the score in MVHS’ favor throughout the game.
Shen believes that the team will be in good contention for CCS playoffs if they improve with consistency. He believes the team can achieve this by working on getting more offensive rebounds and defensive boards during games.
The Matadors have two more league games, the last one being their senior night vs. MacDonald High School on Tuesday, Feb. 19. Junior and small forward Ryan Shen believes that consistency will be important going into the game.
“From when we wake up to when we start hooping, I feel like we’ve got to do a better job passing and sharing the ball around instead of just hogging the ball and having one man just isolate,” Shen said.
