As a resident of Los Angeles, my winter experience doesn’t quite match those of people in most other areas of the country. While some states are dealing with freezing temperatures and multiple inches of snowfall, it’s a mild 67 degrees outside as I write this article. Regardless, I can’t help but feel a tad bit chilly as I watch a holiday greeting video from the stars of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning that was filmed while the actors were shooting on location in the arctic.
A new Paddington in Peru image unveils more about the sequel. The movie, which is the third installment in the franchise adapting the Michael Bond children’s book series of the same name, follows the anthropomorphic bear Paddington (Ben Whishaw) as he and his adoptive family visit his beloved Aunt Lucy (Imelda Staunton) in Peru, only to discover that she has gone missing. The upcoming Paddington in Peru also features returning stars Hugh Bonneville, Madeleine Harris, Samuel Joslin, Julie Walters, and Jim Broadbent, as well as newcomers Olivia Colman, Antonio Banderas, and Emily Mortimer (replacing Sally Hawkins as Mary Brown).
The official Twitter account for the Mission: Impossible franchise has posted a video of Simon Pegg, Greg Tarzan Davis, and Pom Klementieff singing “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” and it comes with the caption, “An arctic holiday greeting from the set of #MissionImpossible — The Final Reckoning.” It’s not specified exactly where the actors are (the giant tanker in the background suggests a port or a shore somewhere), and even though they are all bundled up, they still look like they are seriously cold
One element of the image that prevents the stakes from seeming more dire than they might have been is the fact that Aunt Lucy’s bed is made, which serves to highlight the fact that she has seemingly left of her own volition. Thus, her disappearance can fuel a new adventure for the Paddington cast that is just as gentle and charming as the previous movies, even though it features bigger adventure setpieces and takes place in a very different location from the quiet London neighborhood of the first two movies.
As for why the stars of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning are in the arctic, it likely has something to do with that very special submarine that fans of the franchise first learned about in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning last year. For those that don’t recall, the Russian sub, named The Sevastopol, houses an advanced AI called The Entity that could destroy the world as we know it if unleashed or put in the wrong hands. A special two part key is needed to control the Entity, and Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt successfully acquired said key at the end of the 2023 blockbuster.
However, in addition to fueling the adventure angle of the movie, Aunt Lucy’s disappearance will likely provide the emotional core of the new movie. While she does not appear onscreen very often in the Paddington movies, Aunt Lucy’s teachings are what helped allow the hapless young bear to thrive during his time in England in addition to helping improve the lives of those around him. Allowing her to accomplish her dream of visiting London was also an important desire of the title character’s that fueled the poignant Paddington 2 ending.
Simon Pegg will be back as reliable IMF agent and Ethan Hunt ally Benji Dunn; Pom Klementieff is reprising her role as Paris after saving Ethan’s life at the end of the last adventure; and Greg Tarzan Davis will be back as Degas, who is evidently joining the protagonist on his latest adventure after being a foe in the last film. Fans of the Tom Cruise action series will recall that the latest movie, “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” arrived in 2023. The title (and the ending, for that matter) indicated there would be another film, and it is coming in May 2025, the delay being in part because of the Hollywood strikes.
It makes sense that Paddington in Peru reviews have earned the new movie a stellar 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing. This new image highlights what has been the strength of the franchise from the very beginning. Paddington is unerringly kind, no matter what place he finds himself, and his deep desire to rescue his Aunt Lucy will catalyze the people around him to tap into their own internal wells of kindness, however hidden they may be.
But the new film is not titled “Part Two”; instead, the title will be “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.” The change appears to have been based on the so-so performance of “Dead Reckoning,” with Rotten Tomatoes speculating that the studio “didn’t want to scare away potential audiences by explicitly marking it as the Part 2 to a Part 1 that moviegoers largely skipped.” The movie did generate some income at the box office, more than a lot of movies do, albeit far less than the reported budget. Now that it’s on Prime Video, viewers are catching up. As I write this on Dec. 17, “Red One” is the No. 1 movie on Prime Video — and that’s where I watched it. When it was in theaters, Variety reported that Amazon says its big movies don’t need to score on the big screen to be deemed a winner: “The deep-pocketed streamer cares about much more than box office grosses and views the big screen as a way to generate buzz for Prime Video.” Did that work here? Variety says one clue will be if Amazon orders “Red One Two.”
Amber Heard has issued a statement supporting Blake Lively amid her legal battle with It Ends with Us director and co-star Justin Baldoni. The romantic drama, based on Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel, stars Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni as Lily and Ryle, a couple whose relationship becomes increasingly strained when Lily’s first love reappears, and Ryle’s troubling behavior begins to mirror the domestic abuse she witnessed in her parents’ marriage. Directed by Baldoni, the film achieved box office success despite receiving mixed reviews from critics.
As the series was ending in 2005, the Los Angeles Times said the military “offered script advice and access to bases for filming,” although there were occasional episodes where it did not cooperate. Still, overall, “The Navy never looks bad in ‘JAG,’” one officer told the Times. “The show had to have bad guys on it or there would have been no drama. In the end though, the Navy does the right thing — bad people are punished, and good people are rewarded.” The first trailer for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is finally here, giving a first look at the highly anticipated eighth Mission: Impossible film. I’ve been eagerly awaiting the next chapter in Ethan Hunt’s saga ever since Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One was released, with it leaving the IMF’s battle against the Entity on a cliffhanger. Now that Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is finally almost here, however, I’m scared about how this story will wrap up.
Lively recently filed a lawsuit against Baldoni, accusing him and his production company, Wayfarer Studios, of sexual harassment and fostering a hostile work environment. The suit also alleges that Baldoni and his crisis PR team orchestrated smear campaigns and manipulated media narratives, as evidenced by thousands of text messages, emails, and targeted media stories aimed at discrediting Lively. Notably, these efforts were reportedly led by Melissa Nathan, the same PR expert who worked with Johnny Depp during his 2022 defamation trial against Amber Heard.
According to “The Film Encyclopedia,” Dale (1917-1994) was “a light leading lady of the ‘40s.” She appeared in a couple dozen movies and several TV shows over the course of her career, but her best-known role remains “Holiday Inn,” the 1942 musical with Astaire, Bing Crosby and songs by Irving Berlin. As far as I can tell, it was also the only time she danced with Astaire or Crosby. While many think that Ethan Hunt will die in the eighth Mission: Impossible film, the first trailer for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning has me really worried that this legacy character will get killed off. While lots of characters have come and gone throughout the Mission: Impossible movies, Ethan Hunt’s main cast of friends and IMF coworkers has remained relatively consistent. However, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning may be setting up a major change to this status quo, and I’m scared.
