Varsity Boys Basketball defeated Overfelt High School on Wednesday, Dec. 4, with a score of 75-24. From the start, the Matadors led with a strong offensive position, leading 22-5 by the end of the first quarter, continuing their lead to a staggering 46-7 by the end of halftime. The Matadors finished their performance, securing their win with an ultimate 51 point victory.
Senior and small forward Parth Upadhyay says he was pleased with the team’s performance but notes consistency as an area for improvement. Upadhyay acknowledges that the team gave up more points than they would have preferred but overall believes that the team functioned well. He believes the energy on the bench was great and there was solid ball movement, especially on the offensive end.
“The spirit on the bench was great,” Upadhyay said. “We had good ball movement, and I think defensively, we were on point. We just need to stay consistent. When we let the lead get into our heads, we started to slack off a little. We need to maintain that intensity throughout the game, especially against tougher opponents.”
Senior guard and forward Ninad Suresh was also encouraged by the win but emphasizes the importance of the team’s ongoing mental growth. With the team fundamentals solidified, Suresh attributes their success to the team’s strong sense of confidence, which he believes sets them apart. He says their confidence is key going forward and it’s essential that they bring this mentality into every game.
“In this game, we really focused on getting everyone involved and growing the confidence of the players who don’t get as many minutes,” Suresh said.
Suresh acknowledges the importance of team chemistry and adopting a confident mentality in their landslide win. The Matadors are now focused on consistency and building the resilience necessary for tougher games ahead. As they prepare for their next matchups, Suresh hopes the team continues bringing this energy on the court.
“We really came together as a team today,” Suresh said. “We didn’t take this game too seriously, but it was an opportunity to test out our plays and build momentum for the upcoming tournament.”
