Following an undefeated season with the Varsity Girls golf team, freshman Michelle Wang made her CIF state final debut at the San Gabriel Country Club in San Gabriel, California on Wednesday, Nov. 20. Wang individually qualified for this tournament after placing 8th at the individual NorCal tournament.
Despite Varsity Girls golf automatically qualifying for the CCS tournament thanks to its undefeated season in the Silicon Valley Athletic League (SCVAL) De Anza division, they fell short of qualifying for the NorCal tournament. The team finished in 5th place at the CCS tournament in Monterey Bay and Wang placed 6th at the individual CCS competition.
At the state final, she notes that she was able to play a practice round before the actual tournament, which she said was beneficial.
“I really tried during the practice round to focus and remember a lot of stuff, but overall, I played the final just like it was just like a normal tournament,” Wang said.
Wang scored a 76, which is four above par for the course. Wang tied with six other opponents for 17th place.
As this is Wang’s first year on a high school golf team, she hopes to continue her success throughout the next three years.
“I hope that in the next couple years, we can continue this good streak of play, and we can continue going to higher levels, like NorCal as a team,” Wang said.
