Varsity Football won 58-0 against Lynbrook High School in its final home game of the season on Thursday, Oct. 24. MVHS started strong with their first touchdown three minutes into the first quarter. According to senior and running back Finnegan Hassy, who sprinted a 55-yard touchdown in the second quarter, MVHS did extremely well in defending the field and scoring consistently.
The senior night ceremony was held before the game, celebrating seniors from the Football, Dance and Cheer teams. The ceremony featured all the seniors marching down a celebratory line escorted by parents and friends, holding flowers and posters made by teammates. Senior and cheer captain Michelle Huang says she enjoyed watching the team win its senior night game and acknowledged that everyone on the team put a tremendous effort into putting together the event.
“I got so many surprises, with all of the underclassmen giving us gifts and preparing all sorts of things like posters,” Huang said. “Overall, this game has been really fun, since football won too.”
Junior wingback and free safety Graham Ischo says MVHS came into the game preparing to win by large margins. He also believes winning the game was especially important because it was senior night.
“We just put in a lot of work throughout the season as a whole throughout the off-season,” Ischo said. “That really translated to this moment and throughout this week. We practiced offense and defense a lot, and the game turned out as we expected. We expected to get 60 plus points and our goal was not to let them score.”
Ischo believes that the seniors deserved the senior night celebration, as they put in a lot of work throughout the season and will not get to see the field as much from now on. Despite their win, Ischo, who has been on the team for three years, feels that the night is bittersweet.
“I’m really going to miss these seniors,” Ischo said. “I’ve been playing with them for three years, and they’ve taught me a lot.”
