ASB Leadership hosted a pink-out spirit day on Friday, Oct. 25 in the Rally Court to raise awareness for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Observed every October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month emphasizes early detection, support for patients and funding for research. Wearing the color pink and displaying pink ribbons this month has become a global symbol of the movement representing hope and solidarity for those affected by breast cancer.
For the spirit day, students were encouraged to wear pink clothing to show their support, and attendees received free pink lemonade, stickers and ribbon pins made by ASB Leadership to help spread awareness. A remembrance poster was also available, where students could write the names of loved ones affected by breast cancer. Students also had the opportunity to donate coins towards breast cancer research.
A pink-out football game against Lynbrook High School, was also held the previous evening, which extended the school’s focus on raising awareness for breast cancer. Students wore pink accessories during the game to express their support for those impacted by breast cancer. Senior Class Vice President Anshul Sinha says the pink-out football tradition traces back to the NFL’s campaigns in the 2010s, where players wore pink to promote breast cancer awareness.
“We kept the tradition through the pink-out game,” Sinha said. “Even though the NFL now recognizes all cancers, we still had a pink-out game to support breast cancer awareness, both for the nostalgia and the cause.”
