Varsity Girls Water Polo fell to Fremont High School 14-5 on Thursday, Oct. 17. FHS scored several points early in the first quarter, allowing them to gain them a sizable lead at the start of the game. Despite MVHS’ attempts to ramp up their offense throughout the game, they were unable to stop FHS’s momentum and close the gap.
Coach Himani Kukreja says that the team passed well and had good spacing on offense. However, she believes their offense could have been more effective if the team had been more confident in shooting, noting it as something to focus on during practice.
“I think we need to be a little more confident with our shots,” Kukreja said. “There could have been a lot more shots that could have been taken and more on-the-spot thinking about what the next play could be.”
Senior and flat Sonika Wagner agrees with Kukreja’s assessment, saying that the team could have been more aggressive during the game. She feels that boosting the team’s energy on offense could help the team in future games.
“I think in terms of execution we weren’t fierce,” Wagner said. “We can definitely improve, but I think a large part of that is being more ferocious. Since I’m a senior, I’m just excited to have that animal spirit throughout my next two games.”
Overall, Kukreja is optimistic about the rest of the season as the team refines their technical skills through practice and competition. She feels that the most important aspect is tracking the players’ improvement over time.
“This game went really well, even though our score might not reflect it,” said Kukreja. “Even over the course of the game, the players showed a lot of improvement. As long as we continue to work on our technical skills, that is the most important part, even if the scores might not reflect them.”
