Varsity Girls Volleyball won 3-0 against Gunn High School on Wednesday, Oct. 16. Before the match started, the senior night ceremony took place, during which the team’s four seniors — Kiana Mark, Ashley Yang, Lisa Smith and Samantha Tong — each received a flower basket and a short speech from a non-senior teammate.
The Matadors pulled ahead of Gunn in the first set and won 25-14. However, MVHS lost their lead in the second set after junior Victoria Woo landed on another player’s foot, resulting in an injury that prevented Woo from playing for the rest of the game. However, MVHS regained their lead near the end of the set and won 25-21. Their momentum carried onto the third set, resulting in a 25-11 win.
Senior and middle blocker Ashley Yang was grateful they won on Senior Night despite Woo’s injury. She ended the night looking forward to future games.
“I’m a little sad because we’re nearing the end of the season, but I’m really happy with my performance,” Yang said. “I’m honestly really proud of our team and I think we’ve come really far this season. I hope we go pretty far in CCS too.”
While junior and setter Chloe Chen also expressed excitement for the rest of the season, she thought the final game felt bittersweet. Chen believed that as a result of the large role the seniors played on the team, it would be difficult to fill their gap in the future.
“I think it’s really sad because these people have been on varsity for three or four years, and they all play such a big role in this team,” Chen said. “We’ve all gotten so close to them over this past season. The team definitely won’t be the same without them, but I think it’s good that they’re getting the opportunity to go to college and move on.”
