Field Hockey fell to Fremont High School on Wednesday, Sept. 25. Starting off slow in the first quarter, neither team was able to score any goals. However, MVHS wasn’t able to defend against Fremont as they scored three goals in the next two quarters and two more in the fourth quarter, leading to a 5-0 loss.
Sophomore and forward Aashka Nadathur feels that the team slowly wore out in the second half of the game and started to panic as Fremont started to pull ahead by a larger margin. However, she believes the team’s communication and focus have improved.
“We’ve gotten really good at positioning down based on what position we play,” Nadathur said. “I think that everyone knows what they want to play, what they’re good at, and how to use the skills that they already have and improve on others.”
Nadathur also praises junior and center Jessica Selvakumar, who played center defense for the first time on the varsity team. Selvakumar achieved over six clears away from the shooting circle, defending the goal on her own which Nadathur praises and states is a big highlight from the game.
Similar to Nadathur, Selvakumar also shares a positive attitude towards the game. She believes the team communicated well and connected many passes compared to previous games, leading to some good hits from the defense. Although the team has not won against Fremont in the past, MVHS faced the game headstrong with a positive mindset.
However, Nadathur notes that the team has many areas to improve on, including practicing more before games and making stronger passes, as they have not been able to win a game yet. Regardless, she believes that the team showcased their stronger skills against Fremont in this game.
“We had an opportunity to take a couple of goals ourselves, but I would say that I was not too quick on the ball,” Nadathur said. “I could have helped assist them, but it’s just out of circumstance. I think that this is one of the better games that we’ve played this season.”
