FUHSD hosted its annual College Fair at Fremont High School for students and parents from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 23. The college fair was located in the FHS cafeteria and gym, featuring 94 different college booths. College representatives answered students’ questions and handed out booklets and fliers to advertise their respective colleges. Additionally, students were given barcodes that representatives could scan to connect students with the college. From 6-7 p.m., only students could visit college representatives while parents attended a parent-led college panel in the auditorium. FUHSD parents Nassrin Sleiman, Ling Yau, Eva Pang and Di Wang represented FHS, Lynbrook High School, Lynbrook High School and MVHS, respectively, by talking about their experiences with their children’s college application process.
Wang was motivated to talk at the panel because she believed that her son was not an “academic try-hard.” She also learned that her son could be independent while doing his college applications. She wanted to let other parents know that there are teens like her son.
Senior Yujin Um hasn’t decided on majoring in communications or liberal arts, so she attended the college fair to learn more about student life and internship opportunities at each school.
“For each respective school, I’m split between two different majors depending on what they offer and which one they specialize a little more in,” Um said. “And I’m really taking this opportunity to kind of gauge which one is better for each school.”
Although they believed the fair was a good resource for their college applications, seniors Yujin Um and Juyeon Kang faced some difficulties during the fair. Kang believes the event was crowded into a small space and Um agrees.
“The biggest difficulty is getting all of your questions answered and waiting,” Um said. “Especially for the schools that are a lot more popular, there is a larger group of people that are waiting to ask questions, so it does take some time.”
