FUHSD celebrated its centennial on Saturday, May 11 at Fremont High School. The date also marks the 100-year anniversary of FHS and the FUHSD Adult School. The celebration opened in FHS’s Shannon Theatre, featuring speeches from Superintendent Graham Clark, former Superintendent Polly Bove, Sunnyvale Mayor Larry Klein as well as other FUHSD and FHS staff. After, FHS held a War Memorial Dedication, honoring FHS students who have lost their lives serving in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.
FHS athletic director Jason Townsend presented at the opening ceremony. Graduating from FHS in the class of 1990, Townsend feels a personal connection to the celebration. He emphasizes the impact high school experiences have in shaping people throughout their lives and enjoyed seeing many familiar faces at the event. Townsend states that over 100 years, FUHSD high schools have changed to represent diversity in the local community.
“The faces of the people in those early pictures from the 20s in the 30s, all white and obviously, you look now and everything’s completely changed,” Townsend said. “I think it’s reflective of the times, the classes that we offer, the community programs, all that different stuff. I think that high schools are a reflection of the community. They continue to change as the community demands that they change.”
