MVHS hosted Career Day on Monday, April 1 to showcase potential career options for students. Students had three sessions from 9:30 a.m. to 10:25 a.m. to visit different rooms, where 44 guest speakers presented their career journeys and experiences. The speakers included researchers, engineers, small business owners, company executives and more.
MVHS encouraged speakers to incorporate some general talking points, including the pros and cons of their line of work and what the career’s salary might look like for someone starting in the industry. Speakers such as Product Manager Loy Oppus-Moe hoped to give career and life advice to students that would be applicable later on when finding a career.
“I think the most important thing I wanted to do today was to challenge the students to think about who they are and what career makes sense to them because everybody’s different,” Oppus-Moe said. “We’re all not following the same path. And to not be afraid to try things, make mistakes, fail because things are not linear over the long term: you could change careers, opportunities happen all the time. So that’s my main message is to be open and then be a lifelong learner.”
Sophomore Rajvansh Gupta says the knowledge he gained during the sessions was valuable even though it meant not having tutorial time. He said the information presented was tailored to high school students, such as which classes to take.
“All the speakers are equally passionate and excited to share their views with us high schoolers,” Gupta said. “As you move on and develop in your career, it’s important to have the right information. My biggest takeaway is that all these fields are interesting, but it’s also important to set realistic expectations, as you will not always be able to achieve really high standards, and you have to do a lot of work to attain these goals.”
